Lumio legacy

Refugees and asylum seekers are a vulnerable community which is rapidly growing due to the rising number of humanitarian emergencies. This target group has often experienced long lasting periods of insecurity, traumatic incidents, poverty and lack of access to basic human needs. Additionally, research has shown that most people in this group struggle with sleep disturbances. Therefore, the main goal of this project was to design a product which would improve the sleep environments for this group. Furthermore, it was important to consider that the design should be simple, affordable and durable to accommodate the user target group.

The designed concept named Lumio is a personalized environmental projector that creates a recognizable sleeping environment. The projected environment has the aim of calming and reassuring people who wake up disoriented in terms of both time and place. During this project, the Lumio concept was designed into a circular product, iterated upon and developed into multiple working prototypes. Furthermore Lumio is tested by two distinct target groups and evaluated upon.
